Club History

GEAR GRINDERS

EST.1938

The Gear Grinders were founded in 1938 in the city of Bell, California. Like most clubs at that time the need for speed was a need of most young men. The general public didn’t like the kids racing around the town in their hot rods. A group of youngsters decided to get together and form the club.

This helped please the locals but street racing would continue on until some discovered the dry lakes in the Mojave Desert. There were races almost every week end at one of the dry lakes, all were running with out much direction or sanctions. The conditions were not very safe and several cars were run at one time.

As there were no drag strips at that time it was the only venue other then racing on the street. The Southern California Timing Association was founded in 1938 as well, but the Gear Grinders did not become a member until 1940.

A lot of the club history was not recorded or was lost over the years. The recovery of the early days is still being researched and filed. The late Jim Lindsley was a charter member and was a member for over 60 years. The Lindsley family is still active and hold records at the lakes and Bonneville.

The achievement of the club is amazing with all it continues to into it’s 71st year. The many old timers that are still active are Bob Snook, Neil Thompson, Burke Le Sage, the Carter Family and Tom Bryant.

Many have gone on to be SCTA board members and play a big part in the LSR world as we know it today.

As we continue, the plan is to put together as much of our history and some day make it available to the membership. This is a large task and with the members sending in the profile forms has helped a bunch.

At this time I will try to add a little history each month to the web site. Sheri and Willie Buchta have taken on the job to keep the web site active.

Welcome to the Gear Grinders Website.

We had a few people send us pictures of their race vehicles. We need many, many more. Pictures of all club members would be much appreciated. We are still looking for someone to volunteer for an interview for the Gear Grinders member biography section. We are hoping to get one person a week to do this. Any news that anybody wants to email us, we will gladly post it in the news section. Any sponsors you would like to add may be sent in. And any suggestions.

Thank you

Willie and Sheri Buchta
